HRC FOUNDATION AND UCLA LUSKIN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS TO HOST 2020 PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FORUM: The conversation will take place on the UCLA campus in historic Royce Hall on Thursday, October 10, 2019 — on the eve of National Coming Out Day — and it will give candidates an opportunity to speak about their policy platforms and plans to move LGBTQ equality forward. “If any LGBTQ person were to take a cross-country drive from HRC headquarters in Washington, D.C., to UCLA’s campus, their rights and protections under the law would change dozens of times at every city line and state border,” said HRC President Chad Griffin (@ChadHGriffin). “Millions of LGBTQ people will have their rights on the ballot in 2020 — but today we are also a powerful voting bloc that will help determine the outcome. MORNING MUST WATCH — “THE FIGHT FOR THE EQUALITY ACT IS AN ONGOING FIGHT”: In a Bloomberg TicToc video, HRC National Press Secretary Sarah McBride (@SarahEMcBride) said: “The Equality Act is a comprehensive LGBTQ nondiscrimination bill that would add sexual orientation and gender identity into our nation’s pre-existing nondiscrimination protections in employment, housing, public spaces, education, health care, federal funding. TRANS COMMUNITY FACES COUNTLESS HURDLES IN ACCESSING COMPETENT, INCLUSIVE HEALTHCARE: The Washington Post’s Samantha Schmidt (@schmidtsam7) reports that “in large swaths of Maryland and Virginia, options for medical care are limited for those in the transgender community. Their need for specialized care and LGBT-friendly providers can force them to travel many hours.” She speaks with Jamison Crowell of the DC Area Transmasculine Society about the organization’s online database that allows transgender people to recommend and review health care providers.
